Community Athletics

The Otsego County Community Center and Otsego County Sportsplex host a number of indoor leagues, and the Alpine Soccer Complex provides fun outdoors.

• Bear basketball. Bear basketball fundamentals for third- through sixth-graders is held Saturday afternoons at the Community Center. Fundamentals are held in the fall and games take place in the winter. Total cost is $15 for both pro-grams. Call 732-6521.

• Gymnastics. A gymnastics class is accepting partici-pants during the school year at the Community Center. Call 732-6521 for more information.

• Horseshoes. The Gaylord horseshoe league meets dur-ing summer through fall at the pits near the Community Center. Call 732-6521.

• Men’s Basketball. The Community Center boasts a Men’s Basketball League, playing Sunday nights. Call 732-6521 for more information.

• Open gym (students). The Community Center has open gym for students on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, 3-5 p.m. There is no charge for students. Call 732-6521.

• Open Gym (adults). The Community Center has adult (college-aged and over 18) open gym on Mondays and Wednesdays, 7-9 p.m.; Sundays, 8 a.m.-noon; and afternoons during the school year. Additional times are available by call-ing 732-6521.

• Zumba. Zumba exercise instruction is held at the Com-munity Center Mondays and Wednesdays, 5:15-6:45 p.m. Class is $45 per 10-week session or $5 per session. Contact the Community Center at 732-6521.

• Hockey. The Otsego County Hockey Association holds fall, winter and spring leagues for all ages, with tournaments from January through March at the Sportsplex. For more in-formation, visit www.ocsportsplex.com or the hockey league’s Web site at www.gaylordhockey.com. The Gaylord Area Men’s Hockey League, run by area volunteers, is held at the Sportsplex. • Kayaking. The Kayak Club helps fine tune skills from the winter through the spring at the Sportsplex. Cost is $10 per visit or use a $40 punch card for five visits. Call 731-3546.

• Open swim/skate. Open swim/skate times are avail-able at the Sportsplex. Cost is $2.50 ($3.50 for out-of-county residents) for children under 17; $3 for adults ($4 for out-of-county residents); $2 for seniors ($3 for out-of-county residents; $8.50 per family ($10.50 for out-of-county residents); and skate rental is $3. • Pickelball. The Sportsplex has pickelball for adults. Adult in-county fee is $3 and $2 for seniors. Call 731-3546 to reserve court times or to get more information.

• Swimming. The Gaylord Gators, a youth competitive swim club, meets at the Sportsplex with sessions from Oc-tober through December, then January through March. Call Jennifer Hope at 231-516-4072. Aqua Fit, water exercise for all ages, is held year-round; call the Sportsplex at 731-3546. Swim lessons are held at the Sportsplex year-round at $55 per child per session in Otsego County, and $65 for out-of-county residents. Save $10 by signing up more than a week early. • Walking. Keep Movin’ at the ‘Plex, held year-round at the Sportsplex, offers walking incentives for all ages. Participants use the walking track around the ice rink (1/8 of a mile) or the outdoors Energy Outlet (1/4 of a mile). For more information, call 731-3546.

• Winter Driving Range. $5 drop-in golf, Tuesdays and Thursdays. Participants are asked to bring their own clubs. Call for times at 731-3546.

• Community Playgroup. The Otsego County Parks & Recreation Community Playgroup (parents and children 5 and under) meets 9:30-11:30 a.m. on Tuesdays during the school year and every other week during the warmer months.

• Soccer. The Gaylord Soccer League, affiliated with the Michigan State Youth Soccer Association, organizes soccer for players aged 5 through high school. Games are held at the Alpine Soccer Complex on Ohio Avenue during the fall season from August through October. Registration is in April and at the Sportsplex.
